After a recent trip to Mexico our eyes were opened to a wonderful food culture where what we previously considered ‘spicy’ was blown to pieces.
Tacos, quesadillas, tortas and mole, we tasted it all and left us looking for more once we returned to Belfast. Here’s some of the best places to pick up your spicy fix in Belfast:
Partly owned by members of local music giants Snow Patrol, La Taqueria has recently opened its second restaurant on the Ormeau Road to go with its Castle Street original. If you know your Mexican cuisine, you’ll know this place is good. Try the ceviche and the fish tacos.
Initially just a food truck set up outside the Big Fish, Taquitos is set to open a new bricks-and-mortar taco shop in the city centre. Mexican street food at its best, serving up insanely fresh fish, chicken and chorizo tacos to hungry office workers and tourists in Belfast.
This Stranmillis joint has a super-chulo outside terrace area which is great for sipping on cool margaritas, but the food is also pretty decent. Nachos, quesadillas are strong here as are their variety of small plates.
Moving out to Ballyhackamore, Acapulco serves up a range of fresh burritos and chillis, with great salsas and sides to go with them.
Ok, so Boojum probably doesn’t cut it when you’re after proper authentic Mexican cuisine. However this uber popular burrito bar’s tex mex style has achieved cult status in Belfast and beyond.
